How To Write My Dissertation Properly: A Step-By-Step Guide For Dummies

If you want to write your dissertation properly, you should follow this step by step guide:

  • Set up a time frame. From the moment you have the project in hand, create a calendar which includes daily work for your research and your writing. This is a large project so it is important that you take it seriously.
  • That also means you must do something each day. You need to work a little bit each day. This does not necessarily mean writing every single day, but you should have a minimum for the amount of content you want to produce each day. You might set your minimum at 500 words each day, but if you do that, make sure you have calculated the number of days that would require and compare that to the amount of time you actually have at your disposal. Write down what you need to do each day in your calendar so that you know what is required and you can mark it off as you finish it. Bear in mind that some days your creativity might strike hard, and on those days you might write 2000 words, which will help you compensate for the days that you are overworked and exhausted, and only have energy enough to write down some citations.
  • When you are researching your topic, take copious notes. Write down the bibliographic information pertaining to any quotes, paraphrasing, or data you want to incorporate. It might be best to color coordinate your notes. For example, you can have two different colored cards so that one color can be used to write down main ideas while the other color can be used to write down evidence or sub-ideas for the main ideas. This can make it much easier for you to later on play around with the order of your notes and create an outline.
  • Start keeping a reference page as a separate document. As you are conducting research, taking notes, and working on drafts, keep a separate document as your reference page and add to it as you work. This will make it much easier for you as the deadline approaches compared to having to struggle the night before to get every reference added.
  • Never delete anything. Save content you remove on a separate file so that you can look it over later if necessary.
